Chances for the future
At Cape Town’s doorstep, new professional training centres for the township of Khayelitsha are being developed. In every LADUMA-house, 15 residents are being trained and are able to attain a certified degree.
Khayelitsha translates into “new home”, and over 1 million people are supposed to find exactly that. Currently, still half of them are living in tin- or wooden shacks, the unemployment rate amounts to 75 percent. However, this is going to change.
In cooperation with the Community of Khayelitsha, a completely new CBD will be developed: a hospital, community centre and mall as well as the infrastructure are already set up.
Through this unparalleled sustainability programme called “Violence Prevention Through Urban Upgrading” – VPUU for short – a recognizable new structure with churches, schools and paved roads, to mention but a few, is supposed to be created in this part of Khayelitsha.
This has not been implemented in all areas yet, but Khayelitsha possesses a “modern” atmosphere and a lot of budding energy in order to realize these changes.

The LADUMA-houses are supporting this process of construction and modification. They are predominantly planned as training centres in which township residents can be trained for different professional fields.
With the thus attained certificates, better chances for job-hunting in the metropolis of Cape Town are opening up for the citizens of Khayelitsha.
